About / Biographic Information:

Jae Sik Kwon studied economics in Korea before pursuing graphic design at the School of Visual Arts and Pratt Institute in New York. He developed a design philosophy based on verbal-visual communication, influenced by professors such as Tony Palladino and Bob Gill. After returning to Seoul, he established his own studio and became a key figure in the Postmodern movement in Korea, focusing on blending global influences with Korean culture.

The "Friend of Nature society" poster was created in 2002.

Description:

This poster utilizes a complex, grid-based aesthetic characteristic of Kwon's Postmodern style. It features a large "P" shape (likely referencing "Pipe") constructed from dense digital characters and data strings, overlaid with the script text "Ceci n'est pas une pipe". At the top left, the text reads "No Genetic Manipulation of Nature!". The work combines a reference to René Magritte’s surrealism with a modern critique of technology and genetic engineering, aligning with Kwon's view of the graphic designer as an interpreter of technologically formal problems.
